COVID-19: Locals in contact with Fellaini tests negative; lockdown lifted

Two locals who had come in contact with renowned football player Marouane Fellaini have tested negative for COVID-19.

The former Manchester United midfielder had tested positive for the virus on Friday following his holiday at One&Only Reethi Rah Island of the Maldives. Upon learning he had tested positive for the virus post his return from the Maldives, the government has been tracing people who had person-to-person contact with him during his time in the archipelago.

Two locals who had contact with Fellaini were quarantined at Velidhoo Isolation Facility, and their places of residence were placed on temporary lockdown in capital Male'.

While tests have now confirmed the two people do not have COVID-19, the lockdown imposed on their homes have now been lifted, the government confirmed.

13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives, out of which five have now recovered. All infected individuals are either foreign employees or tourists visiting the Maldives. The number of active cases is currently eight.
