COVID-19: Airport deserted after steady decline in tourist arrivals

The government has revealed that a total of 86 tourists arrived in the Maldives over the past two days.

Speaking at a press conference held Thursday, government spokesperson on COVID-19 related matters, Mabrook Azeez said 45 tourists arrived in the Maldives on Wednesday while 39 arrived on Thursday.

While the number of tourists arriving in the Maldives has been declining over the past few weeks due to COVID-19, the government has now suspended the issuance of on-arrival visas for an indefinite period. Therefore, the country's border is now closed to foreigners.

In the past, over 5000 tourists arrived in the Maldives per day. The country's main airport recorded over 50 flight movements every day.

Over 50 resorts have been closed in the Maldives thus far due to the global pandemic. The remaining resorts are expected to close over the next two weeks.
