Family visits of inmates to be conducted using video call

The Maldives government is making arrangements for family visits to inmates to be conducted online.

After a State of Public Health Emergency was declared in the Maldives due to the coronavirus, the government suspended family visits to inmates and increased telephone calls allowed for inmates. The decision was made in the best interest of the health and safety of prison staff, prisoners and their families.

Speaking to AVAS, spokesperson of Maldives Correctional Service, Aminath Yusreen said while no physical visits will be allowed at this time, arrangements are being made to conduct future visits using video calls via Skype. The authority hopes to commence the virtual visits next week.

17 people including two locals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives. 11 people have recovered from the illness in the archipelago.
