Restrictions on guest check-ins at local guesthouses extended

The Director General of Public Health has indefinitely extended the period for which foreign guests are restricted from checking into local guesthouses and city hotels. The measure was taken as a precaution against the global COVID-19 pandemic.

A similar order was issued earlier, which expired on Tuesday. Upon its expiry, a new order signed by the Director General was issued which said the restrictions will be extended until further notice, effective from 1800 hrs of the same day.

The order said any guests who are already checked in at the facilities can stay on the premises until their booked check-out date.

18 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. The government has taken stringent measures to curb the spread of the virus. In this regard, the issuance of on-arrival visas has been suspended, due to which no tourists can now arrive in the Maldives.

However, a large number of tourists who entered the country before the restrictions were imposed still remain in the archipelago. Some tourists are attempting to find ways to extend their holidays and continue to stay in the Maldives, especially those from countries severely affected by COVID-19.
