Maldives provides its first video conference marriage service

Marriage registration service was provided through video conferencing for the first time in the Maldives.

The marriage services were ceased following the declaration of the public health emergency in the Maldives. The government developed a guideline on the provision of marriage registration services and publicized it on May 4, amid the public health emergency due to COVID-19 pandemic.

In this regard, the Family Court carried out a marriage registration service via video conferencing on Wednesday. It has been reported that the service was provided for a recently divorced couple who wished to re-marry. The Court said the ceremony went smoothly, with no technical glitches.

As per the guideline developed for online marriage services, the couple, the guardian of the bride, and two witnesses must sign the marriage contract before the ceremony takes place. Under normal circumstances, this is done during the marriage ceremony.

The court expects several online marriage ceremonies in upcoming days as the situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic has not improved yet in the Maldives. It is likely that the the public health emergency declared in the archipelago will be extended further.
