Maldives pres hails India as a 'true friend'

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said, the neighbouring country India has become a true friend of the Maldives amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A consignment of 580 tons of staple food donated by India has arrived in the Maldives on an Indian naval ship on Tuesday. The shipment contains 200 tons of rice, 140-ton wheat flour, 90-ton sugar, 120-ton of yellow split peas, 26 -ton onions, and 14 tons of potatoes.

In a tweet published on popular social media platform Twitter, president Solih stated, “During the Covid19 crisis, India has been a true friend to the Maldives. India’s recent gift of essential food supplies is particularly helpful during these challenging times. Our sincere thanks to PM Narendra Modi and the people of India for their friendship and generosity”.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, earlier India had donated essential medicines for three months. Moreover, it has permitted to export to the Maldives some vital medicines that have been ceased to export from the country, and a team of Indian medical doctors arrived in the Maldives.

Countries such as the USA, China, and Bangladesh have also donated some medical resources to the Maldives in this critical time.
