Confrontation occurs between expats, police in Thilafushi

A confrontation occurred between a large group of expatriates and the police in industrial island, Thilafushi.

While the reason for the expatriate's protests that led to the confrontations is not clear, police said the unrest has now been controlled. The police spokesperson said 133 expatriates were taken under the police custody during the confrontation, of which 7 have been arrested while the others have now been released. Two police officers were injured in the incident. The police have denied reports that a police officer had been held hostage by the group.

Entry and exit from Thilafushi island has been restricted as a precautionary measure against COVID-19.
