Pres sends newly appointed minister's name for parliament approval

The newly appointed Housing Minister’s name has been forwarded for parliament approval.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed Planning Minister Ahmed Aslam as the minister for the newly formed ministry after dissolving the former Housing Ministry following the resignation of the Housing Minister. The new ministry has been formed after combining the Planning and Housing Ministry and is named as National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

Two letters sent by President Solih has been discussed in the parliament on Monday. The two letters are on approving Minister Aslam as the minister for the newly formed ministry and a letter requesting to study the scope of the ministry.

The Deputy Speaker of parliament Eva Abdulla who chaired Monday’s sitting said the proposal has been forwarded to Government Oversight Committee for further studying. The findings of the committee will be discussed in the parliament floor before approval and voting.

Former Housing Minister Aminath Athifa resigned due to her medical condition amid heavy criticism over her responsibilities by main-ruling party MDP. The main ruling party had intended to pursue a no-confidence motion against her before her resignation. She was a representative for the coalition party Maldives Reform Movement founded former president Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom.

Planning and housing were separated into two ministries by the present administration. There were criticisms that the two ministries had clashing mandates.
