Three police officers dismissed for assaulting a civilian

Three police officers who allegedly assaulted a member of the public have been dismissed from the police force.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said the Disciplinary Board made the decision to dismiss three officers and demote an additional officer who were involved in the assault that took place on 5th August 2019.

The CP said the step demonstrates the authority's posture on reform, and asserted that police reform is doable. He further said police reform is in the interest of everyone and that attempts for reform must not be met with ridicule.

The commissioner's comments come while some members of the parliament heavily criticized the police during a debate on the police reform bill. While main-ruling MDP played videos that showed police using force on MDP demonstrators in Febrary 2018 at the sitting, they also spoke against issuing taser guns to police officers.
