Govt publicizes guidelines on restarting tourism

The Tourism Guideline to be followed when the Maldives re-opens its borders to tourists on July 15 has been publicized.

The 'Guideline for Returning Tourism in Maldives' issued by the Tourism Ministry on Tuesday lists the details of procedures and guidelines that must be followed both by tourists and by tourism service providers. The ministry also published a handbook titled "Maldives Travel Information" which includes information on Maldives listed in a handy format that would be helpful for tourists visiting the archipelago.

A large number of tourism employees were laid off or suspended as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. A circular issued to all tourist resorts has instructed tourism establishments to prioritize those who were laid off or suspended from the establishments due to COVID-19 in re-hiring employees.

While the Maldives is preparing to welcome tourists in July, 850,000 tourists are expected to visit the tourism nation this year, the country's president has said. However, the state revenue generated through tourism is expected to decline by 50 percent.
