Seven inmates held at two detention centres in Hulhumale’ have tested positive for COVID-19.
Maldives Correctional Service on Sunday said seven samples taken from Hulhumale Prison and Hulhumale’ Detention Centre between August 23 and 30 came back positive for COVID-19.
Corrections said while 10 samples were tested from among employees, samples of 41 prisoners were tested for the virus. All employees tested negative, while seven among the prisoners were positive for the virus. The results of 15 samples are pending.
31 samples from those ready to be repatriated from the Maldives were also tested, out of which 5 came back positive. The results of 10 samples are still pending.
The Maldives has registered 7,578 positive cases and 28 deaths to date. The number of positive cases has been surging over the past couple of weeks.
