Nasheed attributes prosperity, independence to India-Maldives relations

Parliament Speaker and former president of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has praised Maldives-India relations, describing it as an age-old friendship.

Nasheed’s comments come while the opposition has launched a social media campaign, ‘India Out’, claiming that the current government has ‘sold off’ Maldives to its neighbouring nation.

A tweet posted by Nasheed on Wednesday night said the sovereignty and independence of Maldives has been maintained over the years due to India-Maldives relations. Stating that Maldivians will find prosperity only through nurturing the friendship between both countries, Nasheed said he had no doubt that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and cabinet members of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are working to maintain the relationship between both countries.

While the opposition’s smear campaign seems to be gaining momentum, cabinet ministers and social media activists have spoken out in India’s defence.
