Over 20,000 arrivals to the Maldives have been recorded since the archipelago reopened its borders, Maldives Airports Company (MACL) said.
The Maldives closed its borders as a precautionary measure against COVID-19 on March 27. The tourism-dependent nation reopened its borders on July 15.
According to statistics published by MACL, 7,607 arrivals were recorded in the first month after border re-opening, between July 15 and August 15. 12,833 arrivals were recorded during the next 30 days, between August 16 and September 15, said MACL. This is an increase of 69.36 percent compared to the previous month.
9,241 departures were recorded between July 15 and August 15, and 14,984 departures were recorded the following month.
Domestic operation
MACL also publicized statistics on domestic flights. While 3,576 traveled from the atolls to Velena International Airport between July 15 and August 15, the figure remained more or less the same the followign month with 3,469 arrivals.
The statistics showed that 4,323 people traveveled to the atolls from VIA between July 15 and August 15; and 3,471 people traveled from Male’ to the atolls between August 16 and Septermber 15.
