‘I am not a participant of the government’, claims Nasheed

Speaker of the Parliament and former president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has hinted that he is ‘not part of the current administration’. Nasheed made the statement in response to a remark by Maavashu MP Ahmed Saeed.

During Wednesday’s parliament sitting, Nasheed spoke extensively regarding the Free Trade Agreement between China and Maldives. Afterwards, Saeed questioned Nasheed inquiring if his word was a statement made on behalf of the government.

Responding to Saeed, Nasheed said he was the Speaker of the Parliament, and said there was no connection between him and the government. The only link between Nasheed and the government is the fact that he is a member of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and the President of the party at the moment, said Nasheed.

“The current administration is a government I support, and one I share a friendship with as I am currently the president of the main-ruling party. However, I am not a participant of the government,” said Nasheed.
