Speaker of the Parliament and former president Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern on leasing uninhabited islands for agricultural purposes.
Speaking at Monday’a parliament sitting, Nasheed said the government has been leasing islands for long term for agricultural purposes for the past 32 years. However, it is not a wise business-decision, said Nasheed.
Nasheed said the parliament researched in detail the benefits of leasing uninhabited islands, and send recommendations to the government based on the findings. Nasheed said agricultural acitivities can be successfully implemented in inhabited islands, and said the parliament has advised the government against leasing more uninhabited islands for the purpose.
