Criminal Court judge resigns amid JSC push for dismissal

Criminal Court Judge Ibrahim Ali has resigned from the court. His resignation comes while the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was seeking his dismissal from the court through the Parliament. JSC has confirmed the judge’s resignation.

The judicial watchdog investigated allegations that the judge released 10 suspects who were arrested for assault using sharp objects, after having previously issued an order to detain them until the end of their trial. The decision was appealed by the Prosecutor General’s Office at the High Court, which ruled that the Criminal Court’s decision on the matter was wrongful. The judge is accused of deliberately stalling the implementation of the High Court’s order. Three other disciplinary issues against the judge were also being investigated.

The judge was under a 60 day suspension at the time of his resignation.
