Over 50 percent of youth are unemployed: statistics

Statistics have shown that 56 percent of the Maldivian youth are not employed.

Figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of National Youth Day show 56 percent pf the youth are unemployed. The figure includes young men and women who are not seeking education and other trainings. A large majoritiy of the youth who are unemployed, and are not undertaking education and trainings are women. While 41 percent of unemployed youth are women, 15 percent are men.

The most number of unemployed women are of age 32. The second-most number of unemployed women are of 33 years of age and then 31. The most number of unemployed men are of age 19, then 18, followed by 21.

The most number of youth are educated in Social Sciences, Business and Law, then Education, Science and Health and Welfare. The population estimate for the year 2020 show the population of youth between the ages of 18 to 35 is 240,584. This accounts for 43 percent of the country’s population. Out of these, 135,541 people live in capital Male’ while the remaining 105,042 live across the atolls.

Men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 are considered as youth in the Maldives. However, those between the ages of 15 and 24 are considered as youth internationally.
