Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group on Sunday voted in favour of backing a no confidence motion against Minister of Science and Technology, Mohamed Maleeh.
The Science and Technology Minister has always been a target of criticism for MDP lawmakers, with the main ruling party’s Parliamentary Group accusing the minister of not fulfilling his responsibilities. Tension built up between the minister and the MDP Parliamentary Group after Maleeh criticized lawmakers on a TV show. The group previously called for the minister’s resignation and even requested President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to dismiss the judge.
Meanwhile, the MDP PG decided against backing a no confidence motion being pursued by the opposition against Home Minister Imran Abdulla. The opposition is seeking a no confidence motion against the minister over ‘false comments made by the minister at the parliament on the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan’. The allegations made by the minister tie former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom to Rilwan’s disappearance.
The Home Minister recently came under fire for describing acts of sexual harassment as a ‘minor’ incident. The opposition stated that the actions of Imran as Home Minister in dealing with the case haf obstructed the investigation of the alleged rape case.
