Disability Rehabilitation Centre to be established in Maldives for the first time

A Disability Management and Rehabilitation Centre will be established in the Maldives for the first time, Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi has announced.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on December 3 every year. In the address delivered by the minister on the occasion, the minister revealed that the preparations to establish the centre are underway.

The minister further said the government, citizens, organizations and societies must work towards providing equal opportunities for the disabled, and to ensure that their basic needs are fulfilled in an effective manner.

Noting that the importance given to people with disabilities have increased in the Maldives over the years, those with disabilities still face several challenges in living an inclusive life, said the minister. She added that the establishment of the rehabilitation centre will resolve many issues faced by adults and children with disabilities.
