Habeeb elected as Elections Commission VP

Ismail Habeeb has been elected as the Deputy President of the Elections Commission. Habeeb was elected to the post with the agreement of all members on the commission during its sitting held on Monday.

The commission’s VP position became vacant after former VP of the commission, Ahmed Akram resigned from the commission. Akram handed in resignation after the relevant parliament committee made the decision to remove him from the commission. Although sexual harassment allegations were directed at Akram, the committee had later stated that it did not decide to dismiss him based on the allegations.

In his letter of resignation sent to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Akram said he resigned from the commission as he did not wish to stay on in his position while he did not have the trust and support from the Parliament’s Independent Institutions committee.
