State careless in handling murder case: slain blogger's family

Family of murdered blogger, Yamin Rasheed has accused the state of not doing enough to deliver justice on the blogger’s murder.

A statement was issued on Sunday by the Rilwan and Yamin Foundation- a foundation created by family, friends and wellwishers of the blogger and missing journalist Rilwan - after a Criminal Court hearing on Yamin’s murder. In the statement, the foundation claimed that several factors that do not sit right with the family were noticed during the hearing. The concerns have been shared with the Prosecutor General, said the statement.

In this regard, while the courts have noted that the biggest challenge faced in proving the charges raised in the case of missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan was the state’s carelessness, the same can be said with regard to Yamin’s case, said the family. The family has requested the Prosecutor General himself to be the state prosecutor in future hearings.

The family also requested the Prosecutor General to allow the maximum number of the public to attend the hearings.

During Sunday’s hearing, video footage of the attack that killed Yamin was shown in court for the first time. The video was submitted as evidence by the state.

Yamin was murdered in the stairwell of his home on the night of Aprl 23, 2017. Charges of assaulting a person with a sharp object with intent to kill have been raised against Ismail Haisham Rasheed, Hussain Ziyad, Ismail Rasheed, Hassan Shifaz, Mohamed Dhifran and Ahmed Zihan Ismail in connection to Yamin’s murder.
