President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that the government has received good proposals for the development of an airport at B. Thulhaadhoo. The president made the statement while speaking at a campaign meeting held by main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Saturday night.
The government opened for Expression of Interest (EOI) regarding the Thulhaadhoo Airport project earlier on January 29th.
During Saturday’s meeting, candidates running for Thulhaadhoo council seats in the upcoming local council election inquired from the president regarding the status of the proposed airport development project. In his response, the president said several good proposals had been received, and that a modern airport will soon be established in Thulhaadhoo.
It is a pledge of the current government to construct and develop an airport in Thulhaadhoo island. The pledge was one of the most important pledges highlighted by MDP ahead of both the presidential and the parliamentary election.
The president highlighted some of the other projects that are planned to be carried out in Thulhaadhoo. In this regard, a coastal protection project will be implemented very soon, said the president, as well as the contruction of 100 housing units in Thulhadhoo. The foundation works of 96 housing units are already complete, and all units will be ready by the end of the year, said the president. The government is also working to construct a hospital on the island on a contract finance basis, added the president.
