Additional testing equipment to be received soon: Minister

Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has stated that the Maldives would receive additional equipment used for COVID-19 testing during April. The minister made the announcement at the Parliament while answering lawmakers’ questions at Wednesday’s sitting.

Speaking at the session, Minister Naseem said a large number of samples are being collected due to the recent surge in COVID-19 infections in the Maldives. 3,000 test results are currently pending, said the minister. Acknowledging that the current testing capacity is limited, the minister said the issue will be resolved in a few days.

The minister also spoke on the COVID-19 situation in the atolls, and highlighted the major cluster identified in industrial island Felivaru. Naseem said cases linked to the Felivaru cluster have been identified in other atolls, and that the government is working to ramp up testing capacity in the atolls
