Ex-Housing Minister elected as Male' City Mayor

Opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s mayoral candidate for Male' City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the seat on Saturday.

The former Housing Minister contested against main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate Anas Abdul Sattar and independent candidate Alhan Fahmy for the Mayor seat. Preliminary results show Muizzu won over 9,000 votes while his closes rival Anas trailed behind with 6,000 votes.

Anas acknowledged his defeat on a post shared on social media platform Twitter. In his tweet, Anas said the citizens of Male' City have spoken, and congratulated Dr. Muizzu for his win.

Dr. Muizzu's historical win is the largest defeat MDP has had to suffer in Male' City over the last 11 years. PPM won several seats on the Male' City Council in Saturday's local council election vote.
