Nasheed remains in ICU following successful surgeries, long road to recovery

ADK Hospital has revelaed that Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed is currently in the Intensive Care Unit following multiple surgeries.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital Thursday night after he sustained several injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'.

According to ADK Hospital, Nasheed underwent several surgeries on injuries to his head, chest, abdomen and limbs over the course of 16 hours. A final, critical life saving procedure was performed successfully and he remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit, the hospital said.

Nasheed's brother, Nazim Sattar said while all surgeries are now complete, a long road to recovery lies ahead. Another source close to Nasheed said arrangements are being made to transport Nasheed to Singapore for further treatment.

The explosion, believed to be from an IED, occurred near Nasheed's residence, G. Canaryge in capital Male' while he was entering his car parked in the area on Thursday night. Five others were injured in the incident.
