Assault charges raised against Kendhikolhudhoo MP

Kendhikolhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa has been charged with assault following a domestic violence complaint filed against him.

Easa's former wife Asra Naseem on May 18th gave a statement to the police after a domestic violence case against Easa was reported following an alleged altercation between the two. According to sources, the incident was reported to the police by neighbors who live in the same building as the former couple. Asra received treatment for her injuries from state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Although Asra initially gave a statement to the police, she later requested the police to drop the case. However, the police forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office for charging on June 1.

The Prosecutor General's Offices' Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafeeu said the case was filed at the Criminal Court on Thursday. Easa was charged with assault under Section 120 of the Penal Code of the Maldives. The charge carries a standard sentence of two months and 12 days.
