Muraidhooge, Rehendhi Apartment as official residences for Speaker, Chief Justice

The government has arranged M. Muraidhooge and an apartment at Rehendhi Apartment Compex as official residences for the Speaker of the Parliament and Chief Justice.

A government official who wished to remain anonymous said Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed will be moved to M. Muraidhooge while the Chief Justice, Ahmed Mu'thasim Adnan will be housed at the apartment at Rehendi Apartment Complex. However, the two residences are temporary residences, he added. He did not give further details as it concerns security issues and said the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and the Planning Ministry will give out more information if needed.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih earlier this month ratified bills passed on June 21 to arrange official residences for the Speaker and the Chief Justice. The government moved to designate official residences for both the Speaker and the Chief Justice after an IED explosion earlier in May targeted Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

The amendment to the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act stipulates that the Speaker of the Parliament and their family be provided with an official residence. The act further stipulates several improvements to the security and safety of the Speaker and their family, including around-the-clock security services from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).

The sixth amendment to the Judges Act stipulates the provision of an official residence for the Chief Justice of the Maldives and their family. The amendment further includes guidelines to strengthen the safety and security of the Chief Justice, stipulating personal security by the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
