The number of tourists who have visited the Maldives this year has exceeded 600,000.
Statistics released by the Tourism Ministry show 603,815 tourists have visited the Maldives thus far this year. The current daily tourist arrival number is above 3,000, and the number of weekly arrivals has increased by over 4,000 in a week.
Although over 600,000 tourists arrived in the Maldives by July 29 this year, this is a 38 percent decline compared to the same pre-COVID-19 period in 2019. 986,407 tourists had visited the Maldives during the same period in 2019. However, the current figure is a 57 percent increase compared to 2020's figures. 348,238 tourists visited the Maldives during the same period in 2020.
Tourists stay in the Maldives for an average of 9 days. The top source market for tourists is currently Russia.
The Maldives closed its borders to tourists from March to mid-July 2020. 555,494 tourists visited the Maldives in 2020. However, 1.7 million tourists visited the Maldives in 2019. The government hopes to welcome 1.5 million tourists this year.
