Tourist arrival numbers start to increase after slight decline

The number of tourists visiting the Maldives in December has started to increase following a slight decline earlier this month.

The arrival numbers recorded for the first 11 days of this month was two percent less than the figures for the previous year.

Tourism Ministry statistics show that the number of tourist arrivals in the first two weeks of December has now increased compared to the same period last year. In this regard, while 82,484 tourists visited the Maldives in the first two weeks of December this year, this is a 3.3 percent increase from the 79,863 tourists that visited during the same period last year.

The Maldives has seen an overall increase in the total number of tourist arrivals thus far this year. While 1.9 million tourists have already visited the Maldives until now, this is an 8.9 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The Tourism Mnister had earlier stated that based on current trends, the Maldives is on track reach its goal of hosting 2 million tourists this year before December 25.

The Maldives currently has a total of 1,261 tourist accommodation establishments, including 171 resorts, 920 guest houses, 155 safari vessels and 15 hotels. These establishments collectively offer 63,092 tourist beds.
