The Parliament has approved to appoint Mohamed 'Iruvai' Asif to the Elections Commission (EC).
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih forwarded five names for parliament consideration, after former president of the Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef Adam resigned from the commission. The Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions last week gave its approval to appoint Asif to the post, and forwarded the matter to the Parliament floor for voting.
In the vote taken on Monday, 50 members voted in favor of the appointment. No members voted against the appointment.
Asif has previously served as a member of the Elections Commission.
