Dhangethi murder: Migrant worker acted alone, no other suspects involved

Maldives Police Service has identified Bangladeshi migrant worker, Shaolam Mia (29) as Mahmood Aboobakuru's murderer.

An entrepreneur from Aa. Dhangethi island, Mahmood, 57, was found murdered inside a well in an abandoned house on the island on October 15. Shaolom, who lives in a nearby house as a caretaker of an elderly man, was arrested on October 16 after the police found incriminating evidence that links him to Mahmood's murder.

The police on Sunday said the investigation found Shaolom acted alone and no other persons were involved in Mahmood's murder. While the people on Dhangethi handed over to the police two people from Aa. Thoddoo who they believed to be linked to Mahmood's murder, the police released the pair earlier on Sunday.

The police searched the house in which Shaolom was residing, and found several pieces of evidence that implicates him. The items discovered in the home include Mahmood's mobile phone and ID card.

Shaolom has been remanded in custody for 15 days.
