MTCC begins practical work on picnic island development

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilized the project site for the K. Kudagiri Picnic Island and Shore Protection project.

The Planning Ministry contracted the project to MTCC on September 1. The project valued at MVR 41.4 million is expected to reach completion within 150 days. The project's scope includes dredging 8 hectares of land, a 397.27-meter breakwater, and a 428.32-meter groyne. Two islands will be developed in the Kudagiri lagoon - an 8-hectare picnic island and a 1.5-hectare sandbank.

MTCC's CEO Adam Azim Saturday said the equipment needed for reclamation work had been taken to the project site in Kudagiri. Noting that it is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to develop a picnic island for the residents of the Greater Male' Area, Azim said he expects the project to reach completion by April.

The picnic island project was commenced after seeking public opinion on reclamation. The sand for the project will be taken from within inland waters of Male' atoll, from the same area where sand is usually taken for reclamation projects.
