MVR 50 million has been earmarked in the 2020 budget to implement the recommendations stated in the inquiry report on the May 6 attack.
A budget of MVR 1.6 billion has been allocated for the Defense Ministry; this includes MVR 50 million to implement the inquiry report's recommendations.
The May 6 attack was targeted at Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed. An IED was remotely detonated while Nasheed was entering his vehicle, due to which he sustained severe injuries.
The Parliament's 241 committee launched an inquiry into the attack following the incident. The committee publicized a 271-page report on its findings in July, detailing the events surrounding the attack and the degree of negligence of government authorities that led to the attack. It further listed 49 recommendations in three parts to improve Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and intelligence work.
The first part listed 29 recommendations on countering extremism, and the second part focused on financial intelligence. While the second part listed six suggestions, the third part, which was on how to streamline security provided to the Speaker, listed ten recommendations.
