Islamic Center built in memory of Dr. Afrasheem inaugurated

An Islamic center established in R. Ungoofaaru in the memory of former MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali was inaugurated on Friday.

The Islamic center was opened for the Friday afternoon prayers. The Islamic Minister, Dr. Ahmed Zahir, led the prayers as the Imam.

The government of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom contracted the construction of the Islamic center to SJ Construction on March 2, 2017. The mosque can accommodate 1,000 worshipers and has classrooms and a multi-purpose hall in addition to a prayer area. The center also has the equipment needed to accommodate those with special needs. Some classrooms will be used to conduct Quran classes, while some will be utilized for administrative purposes.

The mosque has been opened while criticism was directed at the government for delays in opening the center despite having reached completion over a year ago.

Dr. Afrasheem was murdered in the stairwell of his residence on October 2, 2012. At the time of his death, he was the MP for the Unfoogaaru constituency.
