Maldives tourism: Daily arrival numbers at 4,900

Since the new year, the average daily arrivals in the Maldives have risen to 4,900.

Official statistics released by the Tourism Ministry show the average arrival number over the first five days of the month was 4,900. The total number of arrivals in five days also increased compared to the same period last year. While the number was at 15,680 last year, the number was 24,527 this year, which is a 56 percent increase.

The average stay has also increased this year to 9 days compared to 8.7 days last year.

As the current period is the peak tourism season for the Maldives, the occupancy rate of most tourist facilities is high. The average occupancy is estimated to be above 70 percent at this time. The occupancy of high-end facilities is likely close to full occupancy.

The Maldives closed its borders to tourists in March 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and reopened borders over three months later in July. The total arrival number for 2020 was 500,000, but last year ended with the Maldives hosting 1.3 million tourists. The government this year hopes to host two million tourists.
