Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said the development of Fares Mathoda Airport would reach completion by Independence Day.
MTCC mobilized the airport site in January 2021 and targeted to complete the project by November last year.
According to MTCC, the airport could not be completed as per schedule due to delays in receiving some items from abroad. The current target is to complete the airport before July 26, and the company is confident of reaching the target, MTCC said.
The reclamation work to develop Fares Mathoda Airport commenced during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's presidency and reached completion in August 2019. The airport construction and development project was handed over to MTCC on November 10, 2020, to be completed within 600 days. The scope of the project includes the construction of a 1,200-meter runway and a terminal building. The value of the project is MVR 144 million.
The airport's ABC work has now been completed, and the runway work will reach completion in April. The construction of the terminal and fire building is already in progress.
