Gan Regional Hospital issue forwarded to committee after close vote

The Parliament on Tuesday forwarded a motion on subpar services provided at L. Gan Regional Hospital to its Committee on Social Affairs.

The motion on the declining standards of the hospital was submitted to the Parliament by Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed. In his motion, Saeed said the hospital's standards were declining day by day and that patients' lives are put in danger due to the hospital's negligence. He pointed out that the hospital lacks doctors and that standard tests were not available at the facility. He further criticized the hospital's board in his motion.

The motion was not well received by some MPs from the main-ruling party, with 11 members voting against accepting the motion. However, it proceeded to the debate stage as 23 members voted to accept the motion.

Following the debate on the motion, the matter was forwarded for further review after a close vote.

In the vote, only 18 members -the minimum number required to send an issue to any committee- voted to send the matter for further review. Sixteen members voted against it.

Some MDP MPs expressed concern about the main-ruling party's attempts to block a valid concern raised by an opposition MP.
