MTCC mobilizes Alifushi airport site

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is gearing up to begin the development of an airport in R. Alifushi.

The airport development project was contracted to MTCC in September 2021 for MVR 451,615,528.48. The project's scope includes reclaiming an area of 50.5 hectares and the construction of a 2,871-meter revetment and a 480-meters of groyne. Additionally, the construction of a runway, taxiway, apron, service road, a terminal building, a fire building, and a 655-meter security fence are included in the project's scope.

MTCC Tuesday said the Alifushi Land Reclamation and Airport Development project site was mobilized on April 9.

As per the project agreement, the airport is expected to reach completion within 750 days.

The government announced the development of an airport in Alifushi in a sudden move, which directed criticism at the administration. While R. Ifuru, which is 20 minutes away from Aifushi, already has an airport, many questioned the motive behind developing an airport in Alifushi.
