Thirty percent increase in tourist arrivals

A 30 percent growth has been recorded in the tourism sector thus far this year.

The most recent statistics released by the Tourism Ministry show this year, 560,996 tourist arrivals were recorded by April 27. This is a 30 percent increase compared to the same period last year, during which 389,770 arrivals were recorded.

The figures show the average daily arrival number has been at 4,795 over the past four months. Tourists spend 8.5 days in the Maldives on average.

The Tourism Ministry said that most arrivals are from the United Kingdom. With 73,107 arrivals, the UK possesses 13 percent of arrivals.

However, recent trends show India will take UK's place as the top source market. India possesses 11 percent of total arrivals with 65,412 tourist arrivals. Russia, which was at the top at the start of the year, has fallen to third place, with 56,162 tourist arrivals.
