Newly-elected Chairperson of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail will lead the party towards the 2023 Presidential Elections, leader of MDP and President of the Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.
The President made the statement in a tweet congratulating Fayyaz for his victory in Saturday's election. In his tweet, the President said he was confident that Minister Fayyaz's management experience would lead the party toward winning the 2023 Presidential Election.
The Chairperson Election held last Saturday was viewed by most as a measure of support for President Solih and former President and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. While those loyal to President Solih backed Minister Fayyaz in the election, those close to President Nasheed rallied behind Fayyaz's contender, Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy. Fayyaz won the election by securing 27,163 votes, while Imthiyaz received 19,980 votes.
