Parliament approves Shan's appointment as amb to Germany

The Parliament has approved to appoint Aishath Shan Shakir as the Ambassador of Maldives to Germany.

Shan's appointment received parliament approval with a unanimous vote of 29 members present at Tuesday's sitting. The vote was taken after the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee approved her appointment.

In 2019, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed Ahmed Latheef, H. Seaweed, as the Maldivian Ambassador to Germany. On April 25 this year, President Solih sent a letter to the Parliament, seeking its approval to recall Latheef back to the Maldives and appoint Shan in his place. The issue was forwarded to the committee on the same day. The President did not give a specific reason for the change.

The Maldives' first female protocol, Shan is currently the Chief of Protocol. She was appointed to the position on November 15, 2020. Prior to that, she was the Maldivian Ambassador to Bangladesh.
