Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi has announced that she will be supporting President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming 2023 Presidential Election.
Mariya announced her support for President Solih's bid for a second term in a tweet posted on Monday. In her tweet, she said she had worked with President Solih as part of his cabinet since November 17, 2018, and found him to be a great team leader who listens with an open mind but is also decisive when needed. She said she fully endorsed and supported his candidacy for a second term as president.
During the 2018 Presidential campaign, Mariya acted as President Solih's Spokesperson until he was sworn in as the President. Minister Mariya worked with President Solih for 15 years in Parliament and also worked together as part of the special assembly convened to draft the current Constitution.
The President announced his intention to run for a second term as President at a press conference held on June 8. President Solih said he was the best choice if the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) wanted a second term in office and that he was confident of winning the upcoming presidential election with a coalition.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has also announced he will be backing President Solih in the 2023 elections. He said electing President Solih for a second term is in the country's best interest.
