Maldives, Malaysia to sign agreement to accept Maldives-issued licenses

An agreement will be signed between the Maldives and Malaysia to accept Maldives-issued driving licenses in Malaysia.

The two governments reached the decision during a meeting between Transport Minister Aishath Nahla and Malaysia's Transport Minister Dr. Vika Siong on the sidelines of the UN Global Road Safety High-Level Meeting.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed on August 1. Under the agreement, Maldivians will be allowed to drive certain types of vehicles in Malaysia if they possess a license issued by the Maldivian government.

The Transport Ministry said the agreement would provide training and capacity-building opportunities to Maldivians and facilitate information exchange.

Discussions on permitting Maldives-issued licenses in Malaysia first began in 2019. A large number of Maldivians reside in Malaysia.
