Villingili MP Saud joins main-ruling MDP

Villingili MP Saud Hussain has joined the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Some members of the MDP parliamentary group confirmed to AVAS that Saud had joined the party. However, Saud could not be reached for comment.

Some sources said Saud signed up for the MDP on June 29. Saud's membership brings the party's parliamentary group to 66 members.

Saud was elected to the Parliament for a second term as an independent candidate. However, he was first elected for the seat on a ticket of the opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Saud was charged and jailed during his first Parliament term, under President Yameen's administration, for his involvement in the impeachment of the then Parliament Speaker Abdullah Maseeh. He was later expelled from the PPM. Saud's mother passed away while he was in prison.
