Villingili MP Saud Hussain has been officially announced as a member of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at the Parliament.
During Wednesday's Parliament session, the Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed made a general announcement that the previously independent member Saud now represented MDP in the Parliament. Although the announcement was made on Wednesday, Saud joined MDP on June 29.
Nasheed said all relevant documents regarding Saud's membership at MDP had been submitted to the Parliament. He then announced the subsequent changes to the number of MPs from each political party.
Number of MPs representing parties and independent members:
MDP - 66 members
PPM - Six members
JP - Three members
PNC - Three members
MNP - Three members
MDA - Two members
Independent - three members
Nasheed said there would be changes to the Parliament's 241 Committee following Saud's joining the MDP. While MP Saud previously sat on the committee as an independent member, another independent member will be appointed by the Speaker as Saud's replacement. Nasheed said he would decide on the matter today after consulting with the majority and minority leaders.
