A Bangladeshi national, MD Alamgiri, has been arrested over leaked videos showing him engaging in homosexual acts with several Maldivian men.
Alamgiri is accused of blackmailing and having illicit sexual relations with men. He was arrested under a court order on Tuesday.
Without giving further details, police said the case was under investigation.
Some of the videos that have been leaked so far show Alamgiri having sexual relations with two locals, one believed to be former President Mohamed Nasheed's brother Nazim Abdul Sattar. He is also seen having sexual relations with a person believed to be a police officer working in the Drug Enforcement Department. A third video showing a man believed to be Colonel Mohamed Nasheed is also seen, although sexual scenes are not shown in the video.
The videos were recorded by Alamgiri. The leaked clips show him setting up the camera and hitting record before he brought people to his room.
Following the leaked videos, a travel ban was imposed on Alamgiri. After much public outrage, Alamgiri released a video and apologized to the people of Maldives, putting down his actions to being extremely poor and not being able to tell between good and evil.
