MNP wins Vandhoo WDC seat in by-election

Maldives National Party (MNP) candidate Khadeeja Mohamed defeated the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate in Th. Vandhoo's Women's Development Committee by-election held Saturday.

Khadeeja received 114 votes from the ballot box placed in Vandhoo while her opponent received 85 votes. She received 18 votes from the ballot placed in Male' City, and the MDP candidate received four votes. Khadeeja won the by-election receiving a total of 132 votes against 89 votes.

The MNP, the latest political party to be included in the political party registry, has been doing well in recent elections. In a by-election held earlier this month, MNP won a Komandoo WDC seat defeating the two largest parties in the Maldives, MDP, and PPM. The party has announced that it will field a candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
