MP Jabir to contest Presidential Election on DRP ticket

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has decided to give its presidential ticket to the party's leader Abdulla Jabir.

DRP's Council unanimously decided to present the party's presidential ticket to Jabir. The decision comes while Jabir has previously announced on multiple occasions that he would contest the 2023 Presidential Election. Jabir continues to visit islands and make pledges and is working on increasing party membership.

Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed have also expressed interest in running for presidency on the main-ruling MDP's ticket. While opposing Progressive Congress Coalition has already presented its ticket to its leader and former President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, Jumhooree Party, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Maldives National Party (MNP) have also announced that they would be putting forth candidates for the presidential election. While JP's constitution states that the party's leader will contest the presidential election, in this case, Gasim Ibrahim, MNP's president Mohamed Nazim has expressed interest in the party's presidential ticket. As per MDA officials, the party's President, Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, will be contesting on behalf of the party. However, Siyam has not officially announced his candidacy thus far.
