MTCC's gov't contracts value over MVR 9 bln: CEO

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC)'s government contracts are over MVR 9 billion, the company's CEO, Adam Azim, has said.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of M. Veyvah harbor on Sunday, Azim said MTCC plays a leading role in every project implemented by the current government.

Azim said several projects handed over to MTCC by the government have already reached completion while many projects are still underway. The works are being completed according to the schedule given by the government, he said.

"MTCC plays a major role in the development projects implemented by this government. Many projects have already been completed, and several are underway as per schedule. The value of the projects awarded to MTCC so far is over MVR 9 billion," Azim said.

The construction of Veyvah harbor was awarded to MTCC for MVR 51 million on August 27, 2019. The harbor is 800 ft long and is accessible to large vessels such as landing craft. An area of 1,880 sqm was paved, and streetlights were installed in the harbor area as part of the project.

Referring to the completion of the Veyvah Harbor, Azim said today was one of the happiest days for the people of the island.

“The construction of a harbor in Veyvah brings an end to the suffering that the island's people endured for years," he said.

Noting that Veyvah is well-known as a fishing island, Azim said the new harbor would bring ease to local fishers as well. While the island weighs over 25 tonnes of fish daily, the newly opened harbor would help to expand the fishing sector, he said.

Azim also spoke about the construction of M. Muli Airport. He said the airport project is closely linked to the aspirations of the atoll's people and said the airport would be opened mid-next year.
