Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam has said that ADh. Mahibadhoo's land reclamation project will be included in next year's budget.
At Wednesday's Parliament sitting, Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Tariq asked Minister Aslam when the practical work of the island's land reclamation project would begin.
In his response, Minister Aslam said the dredging work in Mahibadhoo was not included in this year's budget, and no work has been done under the project so far.
MP Tariq said the 2014 Census data showed that Mahibadhoo is the most congested island in terms of land area and population.
The Mahibadhoo Council members met Vice President Faisal Naseem on March 23 this year and asked the government to dredge the land to solve the island's housing issues. Most of the island's issues are related to land scarcity, and the island's residents are very much in need of more land, the council said.
The Vice President had said he would work with the relevant authorities to find desirable solutions to the issues raised by the councilors.
